Mostly Water - haiku and senryu

from Rick Tarquinio

Mostly Water, my first book, contains 120 new poems firmly grounded in Nature and the English Language Haiku tradition. Arranged seasonally, the four sections of the book chronicle a year set in the Southern New Jersey farm fields and woods where I live. Parvin State Park, the inspiration for the title poem and many others in the book is right up the road from here and we go there often. The book also features poems from our travels to places such as Plymouth, Yellowstone, the Tetons, Cape Hatteras, Portsmouth Island, Disney World, Lancaster and more. All but one of the poems are previously unpublished and so unavailable elsewhere. The book was illustrated and designed by my nephew, Kristopher Danna, and the cover photo was shot by me at Bayside, NJ. When I began this book in the summer of 2013, I tried to write poems that would appeal not only to my fellow haiku poets and aficionados, but also to readers unfamiliar with the genre. No easy task! Writing, editing and selecting the poems for Mostly Water has taught me a lot about what haiku is and can be "for me," and in doing so I feel I've taken a big step towards finding my own way and voice in the genre. Should you read the book(and I think you should) I hope you'll enjoy the everyday moments and experiences I found interesting and significant enough to write about and share. As always, thanks for supporting my work!

about

Rick Tarquinio New Jersey

My music is created very simply using improvisation, chance procedures or accidental means. I also do a lot of field recording and sound experiments using natural forces to create sound. I used to be a singer/songwriter in a past life, but every caterpillar has its day...
